Hearing The Call – Lyrics by Martin Thomas Paavilainen Where is the black man, where’s the first women and men? You forgot us and you bit the feeding hand, You went swimming in the oceans, drank the potions, and mimicked our emotions. Become afraid if we come a closer, isn’t it strange like the fruit of the southern tree, black blood on the leaves, you’d rather see us dead than living free, physical and mental captivity, see the strange fruit ain’t sweet, how could you forget about us, was it because you had to bow down for us, now this building my father built ain’t allowed to us, what happened to the self confidence of the black men, destroyed by your laws of attraction, brainwashed since back then, but it’s time to think dirty, we are strong ambitious beautiful black women and men, the world’s biggest inspiration, original nation, waking up to the call is highly contagious, but its only dangerous, to the black man’s haters, I can hear the call, and no longer fear at all, face the man in charge, tell him here we are, Yeah I can hear the call, you could cut both my ears off, and I would still hear the call, even if it drives you insane, I keep my hands on the wheel in the car, and if we build a wall we can brake down a wall, shake away the thought, of us not being great ‘cause it’s wrong, can’t be afraid to be involved, haters will either wish us harm or keep wishing us harm, most of our leaders are long gone, I wonder where the new ones are? We here we black we strong and we hear the call!

about

After a long hiatus since the homonymous 2006 release on Schema Records, The Invisible Session is back with Echoes Of Africa to be released on the newly-launched Space Echo label. Initiated in 2006 by Schema Records’ co-founder and musician Luciano Cantone, The Invisible Session’s influences are rooted in Black music.

Written in collaboration with trombonist and multi-instrumentalist Gianluca Petrella, and with lyrics by poet, rapper, and MC Martin Thomas Paavilainen (aka Benjamin “Bentality” Paavilainen), Echoes of Africa is an homage to African music. From a recording point of view, The Invisible Session embraces jazz as a constantly evolving mosaic - a fusion of musical influences that finds force and authenticity in the groove and cultural synergies. Part of the ensemble, are some of the best musicians on the international jazz scene: kora player Jalimansa Haruna Kuyateh, guitarist Riccardo Onori, singer Joyce Elaine Yuille, drummer & percussionist Abdissa “Mamba” Assefa, bassist Jukka ”Jukkis” Kiviniemi.

Drawing influences from the rhythmic structures of Afro-beat and Ethio-jazz, the 11 compositions sparkle in various timbres by incorporating elements of funk, psychedelia, and modal music. But it is the intersection of ancestral melodies built on African pentatonic scales that gives the album its sustained flow and vibrant atmosphere.

Under the influence of vibraphonist Mulatu Astatke’s music, “Journey To The East” incorporates sound studies on Ethiopian music with melodic structures built on the Bati Lydian major scale - a pentatonic scale with origins in the Middle East. Ethiopia is also celebrated in “Entoto” and “Breathe the Rhythm” - both entirely written by Gianluca Petrella.

Although it may seem speculative after May 25’s event in Minneapolis, “Hearing The Call” was conceived and written in 2018, and expands on the themes present in Haki R. Madhubuti’s poem “Children”, released on Medasi’s 1984 album “Nation”. In “Hearing The Call”, ancestral sounds and percussions hypnotize the listener, while the performance of the poem written and interpreted by African-American/Finnish artist Benjamin “Bentality” Paavilainen, flows with naturalness.

A theme already addressed by The Invisible Session with “To The Powerful’’ released in 2006 on the homonymous debut album on Schema Records is climate change. On Echoes of Africa, The Invisible Session’s “Ideas Can Make the World’’ and “People All Around The World Can Make It’’ are messages of hope and encouragement. Further reflections on this theme can be found in “Mother Forgive Us’’, with lyrics and interpretation channeled by Bentality, and Joyce Elaine Yuille.

Producer’s note

There are two themes that are very close to my heart: my sensitivity towards African culture (Black music has helped me grow so much from an artistic point of view) and the need to spread the message related to the protection of our Mother Earth.

My appreciation for African music started at a young age, while listening to the first records of Earth Wind & Fire, Donny Hathaway’s soul, Aretha Franklin & Marvin Gaye, the blues of the delta, the rock–blues of Jimi Hendrix, the Chicago jazz of the 70s. The recordings of Strata-East, John Coltrane and Miles Davis have been the faithful companions of my musical growth. The African diaspora had a profound impact on music all over the world.  And today I can see why I was drawn to Brazilian, Cuban, Caribbean and Reggae recordings. Alkebu–lan (Mother Africa) is the universal glue.

Inevitably, Black music incorporates the historical synthesis of resistance and struggle. In the 70s, jazz stood for freedom of expression, and became an instrument of cultural affirmation, while inspiring political movements and emancipation worldwide.

The Invisible Session already approached the climate change theme with “To the Powerful’’ from the homonymous album released on Schema Records in 2006. This song is a prayer addressed to the power holders - a call for policies that respond to the need of keeping the right balance of the elements on the planet. “Ideas Can Make the World’’ and “People All Around The World Can Make It’’ are choral aphorisms that further reflections on this theme, alongside “Mother Forgive Us’’ with lyrics and interpretation by Bentality.

The collage featured on the album cover expresses the power and victory of Africa, its culture and traditions over a past marked by injustice and oppression.

Echoes of Africa is a personal homage to Africa, and I hope that this collaborative effort reaches the heart of the listener with the same naturalness it was conceived. The interweaving of grooves, melodies and spoken words are the cosmic integration of Alkenbu–lan in my dream-like journey.
